Thousands have gathered in the northern French town of Dunkirk to celebrate the country’s oldest and maddest annual carnival.

The three-day event is known for its colors, costumes and craziness. The festival dates back to 1676, when the town's fishermen feasted and celebrated for three days before departing to Iceland.

It is also tradition for the mayor of the coastal town to throw nearly 450 kilograms of herring off the balcony of the medieval Belfry, a world heritage site, to the crowds below.
