Atletico Madrid have begun the UEFA Champions League’s knockout stage with a 4-2 away win against Bayer Leverkusen in their round of 16 first leg clash.

Saul Niguez fired the visiting side ahead as he curled a brilliant strike over the keeper before Antoine Griezmann smashed the ball into the top corner to double their lead.

The German side started the second half on the front foot and pulled one back when Karim Bellarabi tucked home from a neat pass.

But, Kevin Gameiro’s penalty restored Atletico’s two-goal cushion ten minutes later before Stefan Savic's own goal reduced Leverkusen's deficit.

The visitors had a good response when Fernando Torres came off the bench four minutes from time, flicking home a header to cap off a magnificent away win.
