Oceans are filled with mysteries and concealed secrets but a new study has exposed the biggest of all: a new continent.

A paper published in the journal of the Geological Society of America has discovered a drowned land known as 'Zealandia' that its only considerable showing bits are New Zealand and New Caledonia.

Scientists say that this underwater landmass of 4.5 million square kilometers qualifies as a continent, and have made a plea for it to be recognized as such.

The continent includes some other small islands and territories located southwest of the Pacific Ocean.

An illustration provided to Reuters February 18, 2017 shows what geologists are calling Zealandia, a continent 2/3 the size of Australia lurking beneath the waves in the southwest Pacific.

If the discovery is deemed legitimate within the scientific community, cartographers may have to add Zealandia to future maps and atlases.
