Chile holds annual "War of the Tomato" festival

Nearly 100 tons of tomatoes were used in the festival that was thrown at the participants.

Streets of Chile are awash with red pulp as hundreds of people shower each other with squished tomatoes in a yearly-held ceremony.

The seventh edition of the festival dubbed "War of the Tomato" was held in the Chilean city of Quillon. More than 100 tons of tomatoes were placed inside a rodeo ring before participants gleefully pitched, hurled and smashed the gourds at each other.

Even the firemen tasked to hose the pulp-covered revelers with water, were not safe from being bombarded by tomatoes.

These festivals were historically organized by local residents who were inspired by Spain’s Tomatina Festival.

But since 2013, the municipality has taken charge of the ceremony which contributes greatly to Chile’s tourism.
