Underwater sculptures to become living coral reef

A group of divers in Egypt are creating an underwater sculpture park. The goal is to create a new dive site to provide habitat for marine life.

The seabed sculptures are part of a project led by a community of divers in the country who work to protect the marine environment as well as teaching diving.

The sculptures are made of a hundred pieces of granite with several gaps and cracks between them to encourage sea creatures to take shelter. It’s part of an effort to preserve the existing natural coral reefs in the Red Sea by diverting divers to new alternative locations.

Experts believe with rising global temperatures and the damage of human activity, coral reefs worldwide are in danger. They hope the new underwater museum to serve as a new habitat for corals, which need ten years for every centimeter of growth.
