China rides high with bike-sharing apps
Chinese startups are tackling traffic and air pollution with a bike-sharing system that is now supported with apps.
Startups such as Mobike and Ofu in Shanghai are taking the popular bike-sharing concept to the next level by allowing customers to choose and unlock bikes using apps for a low price.
Users can then drop the bikes anywhere in the city until the next biker comes along.
This is while previous municipal bike-rental schemes allowed pick-ups and drop-offs only at designated stations.
The apps can track and show idle bikes on the user's phone instead, making the system more convenient than ever.
Tens of millions of people across China already use the plus million available 2 wheels.
10 to 15 million additional bikes are also on the way this year.
