Thousands of Iraqis have left their troubles behind after reveling in a snow festival held atop Kurdistan's snow-kissed peaks.

Kurdistan Annual Snow Festival was held on Kodo Mountain located near Kurdistan’s border with Iran. The event was organized by The Center of Youth and Culture in the towns of Choman and Soran.

The one-day event lured in a large number of winter lovers from different Iraqi provinces including Duhok, Sulaymaniyah and Erbil who took part in a variety of activities such as skiing and paragliding accompanied by Kurdish music.

While Kurdistan’s Snow Festival is held on a yearly basis, this was only the first time since the 1950s that the festivities were brought to this particular area.

The winter sports and activities are considered an escape for war-weary Iraqis. They also have helped Kurdistan take some positive steps in fixing its declining tourism.
