Trump's warning to Mexican president ‘reckless, humiliating’: Analyst

Brian Becker

US President Donald Trump’s recent warning to his Mexican counterpart that he would send US troops into Mexico to fight gangs was “reckless” and “humiliating,” an American analyst in Washington says.

“What we see again is Donald Trump speaking in a humiliating way to the Mexican government,” said Brian Becker, the national coordinator for the ANSWER Coalition, a US-based protest umbrella group consisting of many antiwar and civil rights organizations.

“Donald Trump, in his racism, in his arrogance, is talking down to leaders like the president of Mexico in the most undignified, humiliating way, with recklessness,” Becker told Press TV on Thursday.

During a phone call last Friday with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Trump warned that he was ready to send US troops to stop "bad hombres down there" unless the Mexican military does more to control them, The Associated Press reported Thursday, citing a portion of the call’s transcript.

“You aren't doing enough to stop them. I think your military is scared. Our military isn't, so I just might send them down to take care of it," Trump was quoted as saying by the AP.

The White House said Thursday that the remarks were "part of a discussion about how the United States and Mexico could work collaboratively to combat drug cartels and other criminal elements, and make the border more secure."

Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Affairs rejected the reports on Wednesday, describing them as being "based on absolute falsehoods" and stressed that the conversation was “constructive.”

During his presidential campaign, Trump characterized Mexican migrants living in the US as murderers and rapists and repeatedly pledged to build a wall along border of the two countries to prevent more illegal immigration from Mexico and Central America.

Peña Nieto said last Thursday he was canceling a scheduled meeting with Trump at the White House after the new American leader pressured him to fund construction of the border wall.

Trump signed an executive order on January 25, just five days after taking office, to build a wall along the Mexican border.
