Catalans mark annual gastronomic festival in Spain

Calcot is a type of scallion or green onion known as calcot in the Catalan language.

Thousands of Catalans in Spain have marked an annual gastronomical celebration. The traditional festival includes consuming ‘calcots’, a type of green onion, in massive quantities.

Participants compete against the clock to see who can eat the most. People wearing old-style costumes take part in the preparation of the ‘calcots’, which were then cooked on an open grill. Reports say around 65,000 ‘calcots’ are consumed during the 13-hour-long festival.

This year’s winner has managed to eat 295 ‘calcots’, about 2.5 kilograms, in 45 minutes. However, the 2016 record has still not been beaten. The winner consumed more than 3.8 kilograms of the onions.
