US President Donald Trump and Saudi King Salman have talked for the first time over the phone, discussing a range of issues including the conflict in Syria, Iran’s role in the Middle East as well as the fight against terrorism. We have asked former US government advisor Paul Larudee to share with us his opinion about the US and Saudi stance on the ongoing situation in the region.

Larudee is of the opinion that the triangle of the United States, the Israeli regime and Saudi Arabia are hands in glove to destabilize Syria and Iran, which are not client states for Washington and its allies.

“This is not a good sign and the conversation between Salman and Trump is potentially dangerous” for Syria and Iran, he told Press TV, adding, “The conversation indicates that someone is speaking to Trump and his administration with very negative advice concerning Iran” and Syria.

“The Zionists and the conservatives in [the US] government have said ‘OK, we’re not going to win this war in Syria but let’s keep up the pressure in Syria with these safe zones... And at the same time, let’s move on to our next destination which would be Iran’ and so they’re trying to play on the fears of some of the Trump advisors with respect to Iran,” Larudee noted.

The White House said the two sides had discussed the idea of establishing safe zones for refugees displaced by the conflict in Syria.

According to the commentator, Trump has not hinted that he is seeking a war with Iran as did his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton during the run-up to the US presidential election.

He, however, added that the new president’s allies in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia and Israel, are trying to encourage him to confront Syria and Iran through any possible means.
