First Minister Sturgeon welcomes refugees banned by Trump
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has extended Scotland's welcome to any refugees who are barred from entering the United States by President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration.
On Saturday, Sturgeon responded to Trump's directive banning refugees and halting immigration from several Islamic countries by retweeting a message from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
"Welcome to Scotland too," Sturgeon tweeted alongside Trudeau's tweet which welcomed refugees to Canada.
"To those fleeing persecution, terror & war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is our strength #WelcomeToCanada," Trudeau's tweet read.
The new Republican president’s order imposes a 90-day ban on entry from citizens of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia, blocks refugees from Syria indefinitely, and suspends all refugee admissions for 120 days.
Trump's sweeping ban sparked confusion and anger at major US airports on Saturday after border agents began detaining refugees and immigrants who arrived in the country a day after Trump issued his executive order.
'This is not who we are'
Democrats as well as many Republicans have also denounced Trump’s ban on Muslim nations.
Trump’s former Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, on Saturday expressed her support for people protesting against the ban.
"I stand with the people gathered across the country tonight defending our values & our Constitution. This is not who we are," Clinton tweeted.
Republican Congressman Justin Amash also blasted the order, arguing that the measure violated the US Constitution of and was too extreme.
