European Union Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom says US President Donald Trump’s trade policies are "doomed to fail."

Malmstrom made the remark on Tuesday, while stressing that the EU still maintains its commitment to open economies and borders.

"Those who in the 21st century think that we can become great again by rebuilding borders, re-imposing trade barriers, restricting people's freedom to move, they are doomed to fail," she said.

She added that putting up walls is not the answer, and that the bloc’s success relies on its open societies.

Malmstrom also noted that there was no hope for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a deal launched by former President Barack Obama to aid US digital and service-based companies enter the EU market.

US President Donald Trump holds up an executive order withdrawing the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership after signing it in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC, January 23, 2017.

"The election of Donald Trump seems likely to put our EU-US negotiations firmly in the freezer, at least for a while," she stressed.

In a decision that has been widely seen as a marker to a more closed US trade policy, on Monday, Trump withdrew the Trans-Pacific Partnership -- a proposed trade agreement meant to bind the US and Pacific Rim countries.

Trump, who was inaugurated on Friday, is also expected to sign an executive order to eliminate the free trade agreement between the US, Canada and Mexico, known as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
