California vows to take on Trump in ‘the battle ahead’
California has braced itself to take on US President Donald Trump in “the battle ahead,” in part over climate change, deportation of undocumented immigrants, says the governor.
Jerry Brown used his annual State of the State address on Tuesday to promise Californians that he will fight the “bald assertion of alternative facts,” by the new administration.
“Make no mistake: The future is uncertain and dangers abound. Whether it’s the threat to our budget, or to undocumented Californians, or to our efforts to combat climate change, or even more global threats such as a financial meltdown or a nuclear incident or a terrorist attack, this is a time which calls out for courage and perseverance,” Brown said. “I promise you both.”
The governor also swore in the state’s new attorney general, former Representative Xavier Becerra, who is expected to play a key role in court battles against Washington.
“We must prepare for very uncertain times and reaffirm the basic principles that have made California the great exception that it is,” said Brown (pictured above).
He added that Trump’s repealing of the Affordable Care Act could hurt the state’s budget.
The Democrat said he would still welcome working with the Republican administration on many issues, quoting Trump from his inaugural speech, in which he promised to build “new roads, and highways, and bridges, and airports, and tunnels, and railways all across our wonderful nation.”
“I say, amen to that, man. Amen to that, brother. We’re there with you,” he said. “California is not turning back… Not now, not ever.”
Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States during an inauguration ceremony on Friday.
