Ugandan engineers are nominated for a prestigious prize after having developed a jacket that can diagnose pneumonia.

The jacket equipped with a measuring mobile kit was designed by students from Kampala’s Makerere University.

The 'Mama-Ope' kit in the jacket has been nominated for the Royal Academy of Engineering Africa Prize for improving the chances of early pneumonia diagnosis.

The kit measures breathing and temperature of patients, as well as extracting a digitized audio from the chest and sends the results to a mobile app.

This means doctors can remotely have a detailed analysis of an individual’s respiratory status and preliminary diagnosis of lung crackles.

The technology can be especially valuable for less privileged countries where sophisticated devices and skilled medical teams are often thin on the ground.
