'Droneboarding' steps up snowboarding in Latvia

Droneboarders stand on snowboards and grip tow ropes, like those used in water-skiing, and are pulled along by a drone at speeds of up to 60 kph.

Latvians are embracing winter getaways with a rather unconventional snowboarding activity with a high-tech twist.

Droneboarding, which has been in the making for over two years by a Latvian drone manufacturer called Aerones, is now available for public. The activity makes use of a powerful drone that can pull up to four snowboarders with a total weight of 145 kilograms at once.

The three-meter-long drone weighs 55 kilograms, has 16 spinning propellers and runs on an on-board battery that lasts 10 minutes. It can also speed up to 150 kilometers per hour. But the luxurious invention is much more than just a leisure gadget for casual use and developers argue that its features can be used to save lives.
