Kenyan slum orchestra tackles crime with music

The Ghetto Classics orchestra is shown rehearsing in Nairobi’s Korogocho slum.

An orchestra group from a Kenyan slum is seeking more fame to help the country’s youth steer clear of gangs and organized crime.

The Ghetto Classics orchestra comes from one of Nairobi’s most dangerous slums, called Korogocho, and has been active for almost a decade. They attempt to give a taste of the harmonious art, which once only belonged to the rich and powerful, to people from impoverished neighborhoods.

The orchestra teaches more than 200 young musicians with donated or borrowed instruments. The music classes are a safe haven for the youngsters who feel insecure because of violent street fights. The initiative has already grown popular, with the group having performed for prominent figures such as the Pope and the Kenyan president.
