Jeonbuk banned from 2017 AFC Champions League over bribery case

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors players line up during an AFC Champions League match.

Jeonbuk Motors of South Korea have been banned from playing in this year’s AFC Champions League over their involvement in a 2013 bribery scandal.

Last year, Jeonbuk were stripped of 9 points and fined 91,000 US dollars by the Korean Football Association after one of their scouts was found to have made payments to referees in 2013.

“… Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors is ineligible to participate in AFC competitions for the 2017 season due to its indirect involvement in activities aimed at arranging or influencing the outcome of matches during the 2013 and 2014 K-League seasons,” the AFC said in a statement.

The points deduction ultimately handed FC Seoul the K-League title ahead of Jeonbuk. That’s while, the club was crowned 2016 AFC Champions after sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory over Al-Ain of the UAE. However, they will not be given the chance to defend their title.
