Australia's Canberra home to wonderful sculptures

The Australian capital Canberra is known for its weird, wonderful and amazing sculptures. Art has changed the capital's urban landscape.

Canberra’s connection with art began a decade ago. Local officials had introduced a plan to help art workers. The Percentage for Art Scheme allocated one percent of the capital works program each financial year to public art projects.

Now, there are over 100 pieces of public-funded art. Each work and the artist are handpicked for specific locations. The sculpture price is determined by how "well-known" the artist is and the expense of the materials needed to ensure its longevity.

Since the government has cut some ties with purchasing public sculptures, the private sector has taken the reins with acquiring sculptures, ensuring Canberra's art collection can continue to grow.
