Tens of thousands of South Koreans are braving sub zero temperatures to experience an extensive ice fishing festival.

The annual Sancheoneo ice fishing festival has gathered flocks of locals and tourists who are visiting Hwacheon frozen steams to catch their share of Masou salmon.

There are different ways of catching fish including drilling a hole in the ice, using a fishing rod and luring fish from flowing waters.

Some more impatient participants even jump into pools of icy water and try to fish with their bare hands or teeth.

People can then take their prey to nearby restaurants to cook, grill it on the spot or even consume it raw.

Event organizers say the festival is growing popular among tourists, with the number of foreign visitors surpassing a record of 78,000 last year.
