Google to test new self-driving minivans on roads

The Waymo Chrysler Pacifica moves back to retrofitting an existing design, which leads to radar warts on the fenders and grill, and the large size means the LIDAR sensor is back on a riser.

Google says it will start testing a new fleet of minivans on public roads later this month.

The company’s self-driving car division, Waymo, says the white vehicles will first be tested in California and Arizona.

Waymo has equipped the cars with cameras and radars to improve their sensing technology. The company claims these features will make self-driving cars safer than vehicles with human drivers.

The van’s LIDAR sensor on rooftop, which is a detection system, uses lasers to give the car a three-dimensional picture of the world.

To date, Waymo and its predecessor have logged more than 2.5 million miles testing autonomous-drive technology. The minivans are planned to be used for car-sharing services.
