Thousands of people have brushed up on their calligraphy in Tokyo as part of a New Year tradition.

A few days into 2017, nearly 5,000 people aged from 3 to 93 gathered and completed calligraphy works at a judo stadium in line with the Japanese Kakizome tradition.

Kakizome which literally means ‘first writing’ is held annually at different venues across Japan, as well as people’s homes but this particular event included a contest.

Some contestants were given an auspicious word or phrase assigned in advance based on their age and characteristics; while others came up with one of their own choosing.

In the next step, all participants tried their best to perfect each stroke of their traditional calligraphy brush to inscribe the elegant kanji characters in black ink.

Artworks are to be judged based on their precision and style and winners will be announced in a separate ceremony on February 26th.
