Chinese geographer wins 2017 Vega Medal

A Chinese geographer has become the first Asian to receive the prestigious Vega Medal.

The Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography has announced Yao Tandong as the winner of the 2017 Vega Medal.

He was awarded for contribution to the study of environmental changes particularly his accomplished research on plateau glaciers. The award is the most prestigious in geography and often compared to the Nobel Prize.

Yao and his team have been working on environmental changes and their influence on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau for the past 20 years.
