A fire has swept through a nursing home in China’s province of Jilin, leaving at least seven people dead.

The incident took place at a nursing home for elderly people in the Chaoyang township. According to reports, flames engulfed the facility in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Firefighters managed to put out the blaze in half an hour, and were able to rescue 32 people trapped in the building.

The victims' identities have not been released and the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Elderly care has been a major concern in China as the population ages.

There has been a lot of criticism over the lack of enforcement of safety standards in buildings.

In 2015, 38 residents of a private nursing home in the province of Henan lost their lives in a fire, the cause of which was not announced. Following the incident, President Xi Jinping asked authorities to take serious measures to prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies.
