Severe weather kills 5 in southern US
At least five people have lost their lives in southern parts of the United States due to violent storms and flooding, officials say.
In Rehobeth, Alabama, four people were killed after a large tree fell on their mobile home on Monday evening, Kris Ware, a spokeswoman for the Dothan Houston County Emergency Management Agency said.
“Prayers for those impacted today.” Governor Robert Bentley said in a tweet.
A devastating tornado in the area damaged a lot of the buildings and caused long power outages.
The storm also caused serious damage to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, forcing the authorities to close the venue for at least a week.
The zoo’s director denied reports that some of the lions and other dangerous animals had escaped.
In Walton County, Florida, a 70-year-old man drowned next to his partially submerged car, officials said, calling his death accidental.
According to the National Weather Service, the storms were going to barrel through parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and southern Alabama early Tuesday.
Southwest Georgia and the Florida Panhandle were also on the path of the storm system.
Up to 18 counties in Mississippi, 15 parishes in Louisiana and 15 counties in Texas had confirmed damages on Monday.
In Louisiana and Mississippi tens of thousands of people lost power.
Heavy winds left many structures damaged in Louisiana, breaking skylights and other structures.
A tornado ripped through Mendenhall, Mississippi, while a second one hit Mount Olive.
Residents in danger zones were advised to stay indoors until threats like wind and flash floods were over, the national service added.
Radar estimates showed that some areas in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi had received over 4 inches of rain on Monday alone, bringing the total in some parts to over 8 inches since Saturday, when the raining began.
