Police in Germany have dismissed accusations of racial profiling in the city of Cologne, where they detained hundreds of North African refugees during the New Year festivities.

A political commentator believes there is absolutely no justification for this type of racial profiling which is “blatant racism”, adding that given the history of Germany, it is quite bizarre that police have used it.

“It is very interesting that in Germany, a country which we are led to believe in history and said demonized the Jews from the 1930's which ultimately led to the holocaust and all of these problems and World War II, that a country with that history has such a goldfish style memory that it forgets what it has done and it is now falling into exactly the same trap." Shabbir Hassanally told Press TV in an interview on Monday.

He added:" It is a very interesting thing and perhaps history needs to be examined for people to not make the same mistakes and act in the same foolish manner again.”

He also noted the problem with racial profiling is that the law enforcement authorities will focus so much on people of color that the real criminals will be able to get away.

The commentator further argued this issue has to be looked at in a larger context, and that is the rise of the far-right not just in Germany but across the Western world.

“There is a rise of this sort of insanity, of fascism and racism across the world and this is part of the global Islamophobia campaign that is happening against Muslims,” he said.

The analyst also predicted there is going to be a surge in racial profiling.  However, he said, it is refreshing to see that there are movements out there trying to combat and resist this insanity.
