8th-seed David Ferrer has seen off Australia’s Bernard Tomic 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round of the Brisbane International in Australia.

The Spaniard had an easy task in the 1st set on Monday, with Tomic appearing somehow sluggish. However, the Australian stepped up a gear in the 2nd set and hit a game winner on the turn, to make it 2-2.

But Ferrer proved too strong, as the Spaniard served for a 6-5 lead, before breaking Tomic in the next game, to take the set 7-5, and win the match.

Next up for Ferrer, is a 2nd-round encounter with Australian wildcard Jordan Thompson.
