German zoo animals eat unsold Christmas trees

A German zoo has tried to make use of unsold Christmas trees in order to feed them to animals as a belated holiday gift.

Much like every other year, elephants of Berlin's Tiergarten Zoo were the first ones to be given the trees. The unsold tree leftovers are annually donated to the zoo by Xmas tree suppliers of the German capital.

But this year, the well-meant gift was spurned by the large mammals who seemed to prefer the fresh carrots visitors threw in their enclosure.

The trees were instead given to the zoo’s goats who munched on them with delight. Pine trees offer little in nutritional value but give the animals something to chew on and they help the animals clean their teeth.
