Netanyahu trying to stop future anti-Israel resolutions: Activist

Israel has announced new plans to build thousands more settler units in occupied Palestinian territory in a blatant display of arrogance, shortly after the UN Security Council endorsed Resolution 2334  in condemnation of the illegal settlements. Tel Aviv has also summoned the US ambassador as well as the envoys of 10 UNSC member states, which backed the damning resolution, in protest.

Paul Larudee, the co-founder of the Free Palestine Movement from Berkeley, believes that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is resorting to a policy of threat to dissuade the UNSC member states from taking any future actions against Tel Aviv.

He told Press TV that through these “small” measures, Netanyahu wants to make sure that no country ever dares to defy Israel.

That is why, he said, the Israeli regime has both threatened countries that voted for the UN resolution and unveiled plans to build further illegal settler units as a way of exerting pressure on the international community.

“Netanyahu doesn’t believe a word of what he says about it not being occupied territory or about how Palestinians have supposedly failed to accept generous offers from the Israeli government,” the commentator stated.

He explained that the prime minister attempts to tell the world that his regime has been trying so hard for many years, but that nothing has come out of the negotiations with Palestinians.

According to Larudee, the Israeli regime has approved thousands of more settler units as an “act of defiance” and the regime uses any pretext in order to advance its goals; namely, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and confiscating more land.

He went on to say, “All existing international laws are on the side of Palestinians,” but the Israeli regime does not need the law.

He said the resolution is non-binding and not expected to be of any help to Palestinians at all.

Israelis “are going to defy the United Nations. They’re going to do exactly what they want to do regardless of any law or any judgment by anybody in the world,” he said.

He further proposed, “If the rest of the world is half as determined as Israel is and has one-tenth of the means that Israel has, then they will counteract by various means that are at their disposal such as denying travel to Israeli citizens and arresting Israeli citizens when they travel.”

He concluded by saying that pro-Palestinian campaigns, including the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, can be effective in mobilizing public support in favor of Palestinians.
