Olympic Silver Medalist Juan Martin del Potro has pulled out of the opening grand slam of the 2017 season, due to fitness concerns.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the Argentine will miss both the Auckland Classic in New Zealand, and the Australian Open next month, since he hasn’t had sufficient recovery time.

Potro made a remarkable comeback in 2016, after a persistent wrist injury which sidelined him for much of the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

He clinched the Olympic silver medal in the Men’s Singles in Rio, before leading his Country to its first Davis Cup title last month, as he saw off world number 6 Marin Cilic in a thrilling final in Zagreb.

Potro also registered impressive victories over Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray in 2016, and finished the season ranked 38th.
