US, allies, true war criminals in Syria: Analyst

Syria has denounced the formation of a UN panel to gather evidence on war crimes in the war-ravaged Arab state, terming the measure as a flagrant interference in the country’s domestic affairs.

This comes after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution drafted by Lichtenstein and co-sponsored by countries such as the US, France, Britain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which are known for aiding militants in their bid to topple the Syrian government.

According to the resolution, the panel will “assist in the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the most serious crimes” in Syria.

Russia, China and Iran were among the countries that opposed the measure, coming in the wake of the Syrian government's liberation of Aleppo.

A former US army psychological warfare officer believes the proposed panel is about “distraction” and “delusion” rather than war crimes in Syria, adding that it will engage the West and its regional allies in an endless propaganda campaign.

“This is the equivalent of putting the fox in charge of the hen house by allowing the US, the UK, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey to assume the moral high ground and claim war crimes and launch an endless investigation with all sorts of accusations, slanders and wild goose chases,” Scott Bennett told Press TV in an interview on Thursday.

He also stated this is a “classic psychological warfare tactic,” arguing that the West is trying to strike before the Syrian evidence becomes public.

The analyst also noted US President Barack Obama is desperate to try and cover up the CIA, Mossad and MI6 agents who are in the strategic city of Aleppo that will be “paraded out” and “charged” as war criminals.

Bennett further argued Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step on the platform of the United Nations and report the real war crimes in the country.

He also opined that the role of foreign-backed mercenaries as well as the flow of arms into Syria should be brought into any UN discussion in order to expose the true war criminals which, he said, are the United States and its allies.
