A project in Hong Kong is creating 3D martial arts archive in a bid to digitally preserve traditions such as Kung Fu.

Hong Kong Martial Arts Living Archive aims to collect over 400 different Kung Fu styles, 13 of which are listed on Hong Kong’s cultural heritage inventory.

The project is running in collaboration with International Guoshu Association and Hong Kong City University.

For each artwork, a Kung Fu master has to practice in a dimly lit studio, while as many as 99 motion capture markers are attached to his outfit. Each of the practitioner’s movements are then captured and translated into a 3D artwork that will digitally preserve the moment.

Project managers say that recording the movements can also help them understand the aspects of a Kung Fu technique that the naked eye may overlook
