A Colombian cargo plane has crashed in the east of the country, killing 5 crew members and severely injuring a sixth one.

On Tuesday, the Boeing 727 plane took off at 17:20 local time and crashed just three minutes later.

Airport workers who witnessed the crash said the plane first tilted to one side and suddenly hit the field and exploded off the runway.

The incident happened in the German Olano airport in the city of Puerto Carreno, near the border with Venezuela.

The only survivor was flown to the capital Bogota for treatment.

Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene to take control of the emergency situation.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Just weeks ago, 71 people died when another aircraft crashed into a mountain side.  The plane was flying to Medellin, and was carrying members of the Brazilian Chapecoense soccer team. Three players, two crew members and one journalist survived the tragic incident.
