Nativity scenes are a symbol of Christmas and one town in Italy is being celebrated as the birthplace of the tradition.

The town of ‘Greccio’ is where the first nativity scene was created by Saint Francis in 1223. The town has preserved his tradition, century upon century.

The first nativity scene museum is located in the town. It features a diverse collection of nativity scenes which are made of different materials.

The museum has put on display the murals depicting some of the most important episodes of the birth of Jesus. It hosts dozens of Christmas cribs from Italian and international artists.
