Kuwait envoy denies Trump pressure over hotel choice
The Kuwaiti ambassador to the United State denies reports that he has been pressured by President-elect Donald Trump over his hotel choice for a recent event.
Ambassador Salem al-Sabah said in a Washington Post interview on Tuesday that he was not pressured by Trump people to switch venues from a Four Seasons hotel in Washington, DC, to another one belonging to the real-estate-mogul-turned-politician.
“Nobody contacted me,” he said. "Nobody pressured me at all. I do not know President-elect Trump. Or his people.”
“We have been holding the event at the Four Seasons for years,” he added. "There is a new hotel in town, and we thought we would give it a try.
“I heard some positive feedback from those who attended events there. It was solely done with the intention of providing our guests with a new venue.”
Reports emerged on Monday that the Persian Gulf country’s embassy cancelled a reservation with Four Seasons for alternate arrangements at Trump International Hotel.
“[It is] totally wrong and totally false,” Sabah said of reports.. "[It] had nothing to do with anything else other than creating an exciting event for our guests.”
Some diplomats have already admitted that they opt for Trump hotels in an effort to win his favor.
The development came amid speculations that the president-elect’s business could lead to a conflict of interest.
