Nativity scene comes alive in Czech Horni Lidec town

Keeping with the nature of year-end celebrations, more than 200 figures have been crafted to create a nativity scene in the Czech Republic.

In a project co-funded by the European Union, a 170-square-meter scene was created in the town of Horni Lidec as a tribute to the birth of Jesus Christ.

The model features some 220 pieces including 65 moving figures and over a 100 carved buildings. The mechanical figures in the nativity scene depict farmers, traders, craftsmen and even angels who are at work or are bringing gifts to the infant messiah.

The detailed model tells the story of Christmas in a theatrical way with the movement of characters, life-like lights, religious serenades and a vocal narration.

Nativity scenes have been an important part of religious festivities in the Czech Republic since the 16th century.
