European Club Association opposes World Cup expansion plans

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Chairman of the European Club Association (ECA).

The European Club Association has expressed opposition to FIFA’s World Cup expansion plans.

The ECA, which is made up of 220 of Europe's top clubs, says the number of games played in a year is already at an unacceptable level.

ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has also said: Politics and commerce should not be the main priority in football.

Last month, FIFA President Gianni Infantino proposed a 48-team tournament, including 16 groups of 3 countries, to make the World Cup more lucrative. FIFA's council will talk about the proposal at a meeting on January the 9th.
