UK seeks to palm off junk arms on Persian Gulf Arab states: Leader’s aide
A senior Iranian official says UK Prime Minister Theresa May made the recent comments against the Islamic Republic just to please Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that Britain wants to offload its outdated arms onto the Persian Gulf Arab states.
“Britain is after [advancing] its own interests and making money in the Persian Gulf [Arab] littoral states, particularly Saudi Arabia and it wants to be able to sell its useless weapons in the markets of the Persian Gulf countries,” Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs, told reporters in Tehran on Monday.
Speaking at the annual summit of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in the Bahraini capital of Manama on December 7, the British prime minister said Britain would help the GCC states “push back” against what she claimed to be Iran’s “aggressive regional actions.”
May also said that her country wanted to “make a more permanent and more enduring commitment to the long-term security” of the Persian Gulf and would invest almost four billion dollars in defense spending in the region over the next 10 years.
Velayati said the premier’s remarks against Iran would never have "practical consequences" but would create a market for Britain’s unsold and useless weapons, adding, “This, however, will fail to solve the problems of Saudi rulers.”
He emphasized that London currently has no power of itself and is just following the policies of the United States which has already faced defeats in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
The Iranian official pointed to the great political and military achievements made by regional countries, including Yemen, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and said such developments indicate that the Saudi regime is on the decline.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned British Ambassador to Tehran Nicholas Hopton to express the Islamic Republic’s strong protest at the UK prime minister’s “thoughtless and meddlesome remarks.”
