FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed his plans to increase the number of teams competing at World Cup finals to 48.

The tournament currently features 32 sides in 8 groups. But Infantino has suggested that this format of the competition could change to 16 groups of 3.

His suggestion was among 4 proposals which had been sent to ‘FIFA Council members’ who will decide in January on the format and the number of teams for the 2026 World Cup.
