The UN resident coordinator in Iran, Gary Lewis, has been invited to the Iranian Foreign Ministry over his “meddlesome and unconventional” remarks against the Islamic Republic.

The director general for international environment and sustainable development affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called in Lewis, who is also the resident representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on Monday, the Foreign Ministry media department said in a statement.

The Foreign Ministry did not elaborate on Lewis' remarks but the Iranian official said the offices of international organizations in Tehran, including the UN and the UNDP, must only operate within the sphere of their expertise and responsibilities.

The UN official, for his part, gave assurances that international missions in Iran have focused their efforts on development and professional issues and act in full coordination with Iranian officials.
