In the National Hockey League, Brian Boyle's shootout goal was the decisive marker as the Tampa Bay Lightning registered a 2-1 victory over the visiting Washington Capitals at the Amalie Arena.

Nikita Kucherov's power-play goal gave Tampa Bay a 1-nothing lead in the second frame. But the Capitals tied the match at 1-all in the third when Nicklas Backstrom struck the puck past the goaltender to score his seventh goal of the season.

And from then on the teams stayed deadlocked through regulation and overtime so they headed to a shootout where Boyle snapped the puck between the goaltender's legs to hand Lightning the victory and also end Tampa Bay’s four-game losing streak.
