Indonesian authorities have recovered body parts they believe are those of passengers on board a police plane that presumably crashed in the Java Sea on Saturday.

Rescuers on Sunday recovered the human remains in the sea, where the plane with 13 people aboard, including five crew members and eight police officers, went missing.

The twin-engine M28 Skytruck police aircraft is believed to have plunged into 24-meter-deep waters, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the head of the Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency.

He told a news conference on Sunday that the body parts had been found in the area where villagers had earlier retrieved items believed to belong to the passengers of the plane. TV footage showed police uniforms and other passenger items retrieved.

The plane disappeared about 50 minutes after takeoff on its way north to the Batam Island from the island of Bangka, near the southeast coast of Sumatra. The whole air route usually takes more than six hours by plane.

Soelistyo said the search teams involved in the operation had been mobilized from the Indonesian navy, customs office, and maritime police.

In addition, airborne search teams from neighboring Singapore were also conducting similar operations in a 518-square-kilometer sea area, according to Soelistyo.

He said sea divers had also been deployed to the assumed crash site.

Earlier, officials had announced that villagers had found a seat and a bag containing a mobile phone, as well as police documents in the waters between Mensanak and Sebangka islands.
