The US Senate is set to vote this week to renew Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for 10 years. The GOP-controlled House of Representatives passed a bill to reauthorize the act on November 15. If the House bill is passed in the Senate, it would be sent to the White House, where President Barack Obama is expected to sign it into law. ISA is set to expire at the end of 2016.

Alexander Azadgan, professor of strategic global management, believes that the neocons in the United States, whom he calls “old Zionist hands”, are exerting power and influence through the legislative branch, adding it seems the United States is going to “renege” on its international promises once again.

“What happens next is that the neocons will be back in charge in Washington again. Even if this bill is passed, we have to look into the future and the future looks very grim in Washington with the selections that [US] President-elect [Donald] Trump has made. Some of these characters, some of these lunatics coming right out of the [former president] George W. Bush’s closet and it is not going to look good for Iran,” he told Press TV.

He also noted that the ISA itself is an “outdated law,”  arguing that the situation was quite different back in 1996 when it was first passed.

Azadgan further stated that the nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is not a bilateral agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic.

However, he said, Iran should not put too much weight on Europeans, given the fact that the right-wing party is taking over in Europe right now.

He also opined that people like Francois Fillon, who is coming into power in France, and British Prime Minister Theresa May, are going to be “lined up in the deep pockets of the Zionists in Europe.”

Azadgan further expressed hope that Russia and China would object to Washington, adding that it is not clear how the Europeans would react once the ISA gets passed in the Senate.

According to the analyst, if the United States goes ahead and renews the sanctions act for another decade, Iran has no choice but to go back to enriching its uranium which was its right under international law.

“So we may go back to that situation again. It depends [on] how traumatic and dramatic Mr. Trump is going to be with his rhetoric. He has been quite vocal in expressing his opposition to JCPOA, calling it one of the worst treaties Washington has ever signed. I do not think he has any clue about the international dimensions of JCPOA,” he stated.
