With illegal votes deducted, ‘I won the popular vote,’ Trump says
US President-elect Donald Trump announces himself as the winner of the popular vote in US 2016 presidential election, suggesting that the official results include “illegal” votes.
On November 8, the real estate mogul and reality TV star managed to secure more than the 270 electoral college votes needed to rule the White House.
His opponent, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, has won more than two million popular votes across the country, according to the latest tally, and her lead is expected to reach 2.5 millions.
"In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally," the Republican nominee for the 2016 vote said in a tweet on Sunday.
The tweet was in response to the Clinton campaign’s agreement on Saturday to participate in a recount of votes set to take place in the battleground state of Wisconsin following a request by Green Party nominee Jill Stein.
Along with Michigan and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin played a key role on Election Day in giving Trump a victory.
As Trump called the move "ridiculous," Wisconsin's election board approved the recount.
“It would have been much easier for me to win the so-called popular vote than the Electoral College in that I would only campaign in 3 or 4-- states instead of the 15 states that I visited. I would have won even more easily and convincingly (but smaller states are forgotten),” he said in following tweets.
Trump’s tweets came as he was about to leave his Mar-a-Lago golf resort in Florida to fly to his residence in New York City.
