Steel "ladders of heaven" ease journey to cliff village

Children climb a steel ladder leading to the cliff village in Sichuan province.

New steel ladders dubbed “ladders of heaven” have been installed in a Chinese cliff village to facilitate movement for locals of the mountainous area.

People living in Atule'er in southwest China’s Sichuan Province could only use 17 unsecured rattan ladders before the installation of the new ones.

The journey was particularly dangerous for students who had to use the wicker ladders on the way to and from their school at the foot of the mountain.

Building the new steel ladders that are similar to staircases with handles started in August to decrease the dangers of the road.

The construction took place as the result of an online uproar among Chinese citizens after a Beijing News report told the story of the cliff village.

A plank road leading to the cliff village is also planned to be built next year.
