War-torn areas in Syria have been showered with paper hearts containing messages of peace.

The heart-shaped messages were written by schoolgirls from western Aleppo and intended for the militants who currently hold the eastern part of their city.

Each paper heart tells a story of pain and heartbreak the girls and their families have experienced as a result of the ongoing war.

The campaign went on with the students reading out the notes for their classmates and teachers in a mosque where their classes are held. The letters were then collected and dropped in the east by helicopters.
