Powerful weather satellite to "revolutionize" forecasting

A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket launches the advanced new GOES-R weather satellite into orbit from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on Nov. 19, 2016.

The most advanced weather satellite ever built has been sent to orbit in a bid to deliver best-ever-looks at weather changes over the Western Hemisphere.

United Launch Alliance has launched the NASA-built GOES-R spacecraft which is predicted to revolutionize weather forecasting. The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite will be able to monitor the earth in near real time using an instrument called Advanced Baseline Imager.

The technology gathers three times more data, and four times higher resolution pictures of weather changes in the Western Hemisphere. The satellite is also equipped with the world’s first lighting mapper which will image lighting fields in the same designated region as often as 200 times per second.

The detailed view provided by GOES-R is expected to enhance hurricane forecasts, provide faster warnings of floods and better tracking of wildfires, and volcanic ash clouds.
