Iran nuclear deal, test of Trump’s position: Pundit

The European Union has once again urged all parties to uphold their commitments under the landmark deal struck between Tehran and six world powers last year. This comes after US President-elect Donald Trump promised in his election campaign that he would “tear up” a nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Anthony James Hall, a lecturer at University of Lethbridge, believes Donald Trump’s decision on Iran’s nuclear deal will determine whether he is going to represent the Americans’ interests or he is going to act as a puppet for Israel.

“This is a test of whether Donald Trump really is representing the US people and the interests of the US electorate, the citizens or if he is in fact a tool of Israel, a puppet regime leader,” the academic told Press TV.

Hall further opined that the nuclear deal is not just between Iran and the United States but it is an agreement with the UN Security Council plus five other world powers.

He also noted the European Union is not a group of equals in reality, adding that Germany - which is also part of the nuclear deal with Iran - has a disproportionately large role in the bloc, and it is the economic engine of Europe.

The academic further mentioned having decent relations with Iran is important for a faction within the German government.

He also argued it is in the United States advantage to have decent ties with Iran, such as selling commercial airliners, and getting the proper licenses.

“So normal proper kind of economic relations can prevail and we can live in a world characterized by peaceful constructive relationships between peoples rather than a single faction dominating the super power to intimidate the world and threaten the world with the huge military capacity centered in the US military industrial complex,” he said.  .
