Metered tuk tuks go on Cambodian roads

Tuk tuks, the 3-wheeled vehicles, in Cambodia.

Negotiating a price with a rickshaw driver in Cambodia could become a thing of the past, thanks to a new fleet of metered tuk tuks on the roads.

A company in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh is fitting all its vehicles with meters that determine the cost of a ride to standard distance-based rates.

Fares are set at around 75 US cents for the first kilometer and 8 cents for every additional 300 meters. Some drivers say the new system works out cheaper than the fares charged by regular rickshaws and taxis.

It all sounds practical for tourists, but some believe the normal tuk tuks are better for the locals because they are said to carry more people and a lot more goods.
