Iran chess players top-ranked in Asian U-14 championship

Young Iranian chess players have put a brilliant end to their campaign at the first edition of the Asian Nations Cup Under-14 Team Championship in China, and finished first to pick up the trophy at the end of the continental sporting event.

The Iranian outfit claimed the blitz title of the tournament in the northern Chinese city of Jiaxing on Tuesday, having scored 15 points after nine rounds.

China’s A team finished runner-up with 14 points, and Sri Lankans were third finishers with a point less.

The championship started in Jiaxing on November 5 and will conclude on November 12.  

The games are played in a Swiss system of nine rounds. Every match is played over four boards. The time control is 90 minutes for the whole game with an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.

The event has brought together dozens of junior chess players from Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Macau, Malaysia, the Maldives, Mongolia, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

The Iranian team consists of Mehdi Gholami, Borna Derakhshani, Arash Daghli, Seyed Kian Pourmousavai and Anahita Zahedifar.
