A senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says a small-scale world war has been waged by terrorists against the oppressed people in the Middle East.

“European countries must take note that terrorists from more than 80 countries, including some European states, are present in this region and have waged a small-scale world war against the oppressed regional nations,” Ali Akbar Velayati said in a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday with State Secretary for Foreign Policy at Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lone Dencker Wisborg.

“These events can carry irreparable consequences for other countries, particularly the supporters of terrorists,” he added.

He said Denmark and other European countries “can play a better, more independent and more effective role in solving regional issues, particularly the fight against terrorism and extremist and Takfiri movements.”

The senior Iranian official further said Iran and Denmark enjoy before them favorable grounds for cooperation in different fields and urged the two countries to draw up plans in order to improve cooperation.

The Danish diplomat, for her part, said Tehran and Copenhagen are cooperating and consulting with each other on mutual and regional issues.

She stressed the importance of finding a peaceful and political solution to the existing conflicts in the Middle East.

Europe must remain independent in policy-making: Velayati

Meanwhile, in a meeting with Swedish Deputy Foreign Minister Annika Soder in Tehran, Velayati, who is the Leader’s adviser on international affairs, also said European countries must remain independent in adopting their policies.

“Iran believes that regional issues undoubtedly have no military solution and that efforts and cooperation should be made in order to find a political solution and establish peace and stability in the region,” he said on Tuesday.

The top Iranian official expressed Iran’s readiness to cooperate with all countries which are keen to solve regional conflicts through diplomatic approaches.

He said the ongoing crimes against regional countries and nations are historically unprecedented.

“However, regional countries will stand against divisive plots and schemes that seek to partition countries in this region,” Velayati pointed out.

For her part, the Swedish diplomat expressed hope that European countries would be able to adopt appropriate measures to solve the issue of refugees by making use of Iran’s experience.

Soder, who is on an official visit to Tehran, has so far held separate meetings with senior Iranian officials including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-e Ravanchi and Hossein Jaberi Ansari as well as the Iranian parliament speaker's special adviser on international affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
